WDMOC PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
Barry Moran
Once again, I have had the pleasure of being President of this wonderful motorcycle club; the Warrnambool and District Motorcycle Owners Club.
Thankyou
As in previous years there are several members that I wish to thank for their tireless support and effort. This year is no exception and one person that I would like to specifically thank for her effort is our secretary; Elaine. At January’s meeting, Elaine advised the membership that she would be stepping down and not seeking re-election as Secretary at our AGM; this announcement came as a surprise after serving as Secretary for the past fourteen years. However, Elaine has indicated that she is willing to still carry out the Treasurer’s position if the members are willing to vote her in at our AGM.
Elaine has been a stalwart for the WDMOC for the past fourteen years with keeping us informed and in particular for organising and the running of the Surf City Safari’s; an unbelievable job and on behalf of all the members a sincere thank you Elaine.
Thank you must also go to our Vice President, Kevin Langley for his support and leadership of this club in the past twelve months.
To our fearless ride coordinator who knows every road in the south west area of Victoria and I also think most of Victoria; thankyou. Both Bruce and his wife Kate have been battling some health issues for some time now, but every time there is a social function both Brue and Kate arrive with huge smiles ready to socialize and talk to the members. We wish Bruce and Kate all the best for the future and to get well soon.
Thank you to our Executive Committee members; David Morse, Wayne Fary (scrutineers)Ken Rowe, Graeme Robinson, Geoff Grec, Geoff McLeod, Elaine Finnigan, and Bruce Brown.
The Executive Committee members discuss all topics that have some impact on this club; be it small or large with the final recommendations going to a full membership vote.
A big thankyou to our WEB page guru Bill Owens. Bill has been instrumental in not only keeping the WEB page up to date, he has been researching and presenting policies such as; Child Safety, Risk Management, Code of Conduct, Life Membership, and Financial. Thank you must also go to Peter O’Keefe who has been assisting Bill with introducing some of these policies.
Guest Speakers
This year we had only one guest speaker with Matt Porter from Neil Porter Legacy. Mat gave us an overview of what the Neil Porter Legacy was about and how his father was the founder of this great concept.
Concerns were raised by some members at our January meeting, that our meetings may be going too long with having guest speakers. At our Executive Committee meeting in February, that a proposal be forwarded to the members, that we do not have guest speakers unless they are a member of our club or someone who has something that is related to motorbikes.
Mishaps
Unfortunately for Steve Heazlewood the start of 2024 was not that exciting for him. Steve fell off his bike at lake Pertobe when a lady walked out in front of him. Steve sustained 3 broken ribs and celebrated his 86th birthday the following Saturday very quietly. Unfortunately the format of the photo is unable to be loaded, but lets say its fairly graphic
Surf City Safari
The 2023 Surf City Safari was looking to be a very quiet rally as numbers were way down on previous years. However, with Elaine’s persistence to our members to attend and advertising on social media, numbers were up and we had 64 entries.
This year’s Safari saw many of our usual and some new sponsors donate to our rally. JB Hi-Fi donated a $200 speaker, Tyre Factory donated a $300 voucher, Norfolk Pharmacy $150 hamper. Nissan and Clinton Baulch Motor Group stepped forward with 3 x $500 service vouchers, an amazing donation. WDMOC thank you for your generous gift.
Saturday’s ride was a little windy but we had a great lunch that was catered for by the Panmure CWA ladies. Saturday night’s dinner was once again held at the RSL with 58 members and their partners present. A great night was had by all.
Sunday was a great ride once again on a beautiful warm day. We were greeted by parents and friends of the Tarrington Lutheran School, who cooked a very nice bbq lunch for us.
Thank you to all our members that assisted and contributed to a fantastic Safari.
At an Executive Committee meeting this year it was decided that we will not seek large sponsorship and that raffles will be limited to the rally. This was presented to the members at the March meeting with no objections.
Donations
For many years the WDMOC has donated to the Salvation Toy Run. From donating to one organization, we have expanded to include other worthwhile organisations.
This year we increased our support to $2000 to the Salvation Army Toy Run and the Neil Porter Legacy, with a $1000 donation to the Gillan Boys Foundation.
Executive moved at the February meeting that the $1000 that was still to be used be donated to Tayla Relph. The reason for this was that Tayla is the only Australian in the inaugural FIM Womens Circuit Racing Championship in Europe.
The Executive Committee discussed the concerns that WDMOC are a not-for-profit organization, and that we could not have any ‘gray’ areas. Therefore, if WDMOC had a build-up of funds excess to our needs, the Executive will then look into the needs of other organisations that would benefit from our donation and where we would also benefit. e.g. Hospital equipment etc.
M2M
This year Swan Hill’s leg of the M2M was eliminate due to the lack of cyclist numbers that have been slowly decreasing over the years since covid. This year 8 of the 12 motorcycle marshals were from our club. Congratulations to Bruce Brown, Brian Clapp, Bill Frost, Geoff Grec, Richard Litt, Ross Malone, David McNabb and Chris Mowat, for their assistance once again and a big thankyou from the M2M Committee.
Ride Etiquette
A gentle reminder that we as a club agree to ride as per our discussions. The discussions/ agreement was that we keep a minimum distance of 3 seconds in dry weather from the bike in front of you and ideally in a staggered formation, however the condition of the roads will dictate that. You must be able to see the motorcyclist’s headlight behind you and if they cannot be seen then you must slow down so the headlight can be seen.
At each change of direction, the motorbike behind the lead rider must stop and indicate to the riders behind the change of direction. If we have a new rider or someone has forgotten to stop and indicate, we ask the rider behind to stop and indicate.
Safe Riding
