PRESIDENTS REPORT
GUEST SPEAKER
Our meeting this month had the pleasure of having as our guest speaker Dr Philip Gan MBBS FRACS, Director of General Surgery Southwest Healthcare, Affiliate Professor, Deakin University, School of Medicine.
Dr Philip Gan graduated in Medicine at the University of Melbourne 32 years ago and moved to Warrnambool with his family 22 years ago after completing his training in general surgery. He has been the Director of General Surgery at Southwest Healthcare for the last 5 years and was made an affiliate Associate Professor through the Deakin University Medical School last year.
During these 22 years in Warrnambool, Phil has taken a particular interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery and introduced many new techniques to the region. He was the first surgeon in regional Australia to report on his initial series of laparoscopic bowel cancer surgery. He has pushed the envelope to do his laparoscopic operations with the fewest and smallest scars possible, using a range of advanced techniques.
Phil is also an inventor and has 3 medical device patents granted in many territories world-wide, with the lead device, the LiVac Retractor, in clinical use in the USA.
Phil has published and presented internationally through the United States, Europe and Asia. He has been a guest lecturer for the University of Adelaide Masters of Minimally Invasive Surgery degree for ten years.
Philip was invited to speak to the biggest laparoscopic society in North America on March 29, 2023.
Thank you, Philip, for your talk and insight into a surgeon’s life in South West Victoria.
