Thankyou
I would like to thank Kevin Langley for chairing the meeting on 9th March while I was away.
Condolences
The Club wishes to pass on their sincere condolences to Gwenda Malseed on the recent passing of your mother Jean.
Condolences to the family of Phil Woodhams & Gordon Beasley.
Laurie Gunnulson
I called in to see Laurie and his wife Pat to see how they were going, their son Peter greeted me at the door and invited me in to see them. Laurie has dementia and is unable to communicate and has difficulty walking. Laurie although not able to communicate has still got that characteristic smile. Peter is home from Indonesia where he has been living for the past eight years just to look after both Laurie and Pat. Pat is still very spritely and knows exactly what is going on but needs a walking frame to get around.
If you are out and about call into 45 Kerr St and say hello, they would both love to see you.
Register of Members
Ross Maloney spoke to the meeting about his idea of ‘Register of Members’. Ross’s plan is for members to forward their details, as much or as least information as to what they want to contribute.
Below is a spreadsheet that Ross has put together for his profile. What is not shown is the column for comments.
I personally like the idea with an added piece to the information which would be a photo of member. Maybe add that into the comments column.
If you want to contribute or ask Ross anything email or phone number is below.

History of the Club
I mentioned at one of our previous meetings that I would like to see the history of the club put into a formal document/book. I have organized an ex English school teacher to assist us with doing this. Ms. Maureen Fawcett who writes the District 5 CFA newsletter has agreed to help us. The ‘older-foundation members’ might receive a phone call from me to arrange a meeting with Maureen.
If anyone has photos or information, or wish to read through some old newsletters or papers or help in any way please let me know. 0438614618
Foodshare
Foodshare are looking for volunteers during these next couple of months while their full time volunteers are away for winter. Please contact Foodshare on 0428197715 or visit their warehouse at 24a Harrington Rd Warrnambool.
Guest Speaker’s
We had the pleasure of two guest speakers this meeting. Mr. Brian Dillon, President, Warrnambool and District Community Hospice, and Hospice committee member Ms. Wendy (Roe) Currington.
Brian spoke to us about Hospice and what Hospice is all about; the following dot points are a brief of his presentation.
Wendy (Roe) Cunnington
Wendy has been a Hospice Board Member for twelve months and is involved in the fundraising arm of the organization.
Wendy has come up with an idea to raise money and awareness of Hospice. Wendy’s idea is to run a motorbike ride similar to the Ararat Blue Ribbon Ride and the Warrnambool Christmas Toy Run.
Wendy would like to see it as an annual event involving the WDMOC club to assist with the planning of the ride and marshalling. The ride would finish at Woolsthorpe Hotel with raffles and give aways. The reason to finish at the Woolsthorpe Hotel is that Colin McKenna is a great support and contributor to Hospice.
Many of the members present indicated they were in favour of supporting the concept of the ride.

- Hospice vision: Our vision is for a caring and compassionate community that facilitates the choice to die in the comfort of home.
- Hospice mission: To support the provision of end-of-life care at home.
- Warrnambool & District Community Hospice was established in 2010, as a not-for-profit community organisation. We are governed by a Committee of Management.
- ‘Hospice in the Home’ services commenced in 2015 by the first group of trained volunteers.
- Funding: We receive support from a very generous community; Short-term government grants; Local Trusts and Foundations; Donations from individuals, businesses, service clubs and community groups; Bequests and fundraising events and activities
- Volunteers: We are powered by approximately 70 volunteers; a Committee of Management; ‘Hospice in the Home’ service; Training to our volunteers; Administration and Cleaning and maintenance service.
- What are the Features of Hospice in the Home? We collaborate with the Community Palliative Care team and other support services. We have trained volunteers, who assist carers to care for dying clients in their own homes. Daytime, overnight and weekend care is offered, depending on the client’s circumstances and volunteer availability.
- Volunteer Training: The Palliative Care Victoria (PCV) volunteer training course is conducted over 4-5 weeks. We have added a session on practical skills training. We have trained over 150 volunteers since 2015. Volunteers receive ongoing PD via monthly volunteer meetings and online courses and information.
- Referrals: Referral (with consent) can come from anyone: GP, CPC, Specialists, family, friends, the community.
- Eligibility criteria: The service is available for adults, living in Warrnambool, Moyne or Corangamite shires. The service is for end-of-life care. Symptoms can be managed at home. Volunteers are available.
- What is the Process: We receive a referral. We meet with the family to discuss their needs and do an in-home risk assessment. We seek available volunteers, then allocate them to a weekly roster. We communicate regularly with the client/carer and volunteers to adjust support as needed. Post client death, we offer debriefing and support to our volunteers, along with a break from volunteering. Carers are invited to attend the monthly bereavement Cuppa Club social group. Volunteers may resume when they feel ready.
- Benefits of ‘Hospice in the Home’: People who would prefer to die at home have a better chance of doing so. Families and friends are supported through a difficult time. There will be fewer inappropriate, more expensive admissions to hospital. We hope there will be improved community resilience for those facing dying and death.
