WDMOC PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023
It has been a pleasure once again to be President of the Warrnambool and District Motorcycle Owners Club for the year 2022 – 2023.
Thankyou
Before I go into my report, I must thank some special members of this club that keep the wheels in motion and ensure we have a great time and are informed as to what is happening.
First, I would like to thank Elaine for her tireless effort in sending out the meeting agendas, minutes of meetings, organising the Surf City Safari Rally flyers and registration forms, oranising the catering for the Rally and occasionally leading us on a ride. Thank you from all of us Elaine.
Bruce Brown, informed me last weekend that there were a couple of roads he hadn’t been on before, which surprised me. Anyone that organizes a ride, particularly a long ride, knows there is a bit of planning that goes into these rides and generally its Bruce that organizes these. Bruce not only organizes many of the Sunday rides, he is there for the Thursday ride and often plans the route for the Surf City Safari rides.
Once again on behalf of all the members, thank you Bruce for your continuous support of this club.
Kevin Langley has been a real backstop for me and is a great contributor to the executive. Kevin does a lot behind the scenes consulting with me on many topics. Thanks, Kevin, for you great support.
A sincere thanks to the Executive Committee. The Committee which included the above members and Ken Rowe, David Morse, Wayne Fary, Tony Kane, and Graeme Robinson.
Bill Owens has continually kept our web site up to date with all the changes, and ensured that our Constitution was in line with the State Government requirements. Thanks Bill.
Social Night
Our first social night for the fiscal year was held on August 14th at the Caledonian hotel. It was attended by a number of our members and their partners.
WDMOC Christmas party was held at Images Restaurant on 15th December. Nearly 60 members and their guests attended a great night out.
On the 9th February this year, our club booked a table to the Ted Collins fun raising night at the City Memorial Bowls Club. Ted has returned to Super Bike Racing and the night was organized to kick start his campaign. Ted being a former member of WDMOC and his father Jon a current member, many of us decided to help with his endeavours by participating in the night.
Micky Bourke’s hotel was our social night out with 45 members and their partners attending. We had a great meal with enjoyable company.
Guest Speakers
At our September meeting our first guest speaker or the year was Chris Philpot, Admin manager/Ministry assistant for the Warrnambool Salvation Army. Chis spoke about the role of the Salvation Army and their new headquarters that are currently being built on Mortlake Road.
Donna Koik coordinator of ‘Your Heart Matters’ spoke at our November meeting. Donna talked about Heart Health Checks and why we must ensure we have regular heart checkups. A free heart check with your own GP was available to everyone until the end of March 2023.
In January, CPR training was introduced by me to those members present. It was, I believe, a very opportune time after Donna Koik’s information on ‘Your Heart Matters’. A small part of the presentation spoke about the difference of a heart attack vs cardiac arrest and some of the signs and symptoms to look for. After the short theory session all members had the opportunity to have ‘hands on’ practical experience.
Our guest speaker for the month of March was Dr. Philip Gan MBBS FRACS, Director of General Surgery Southwest Healthcare, Affiliate Professor, Deakin University, School of Medicine. During these 22 years in Warrnambool, Phil has taken a particular interest in advanced laparoscopic surgery and introduced many new techniques to the region. He was the first surgeon in regional Australia to report on his initial series of laparoscopic bowel cancer surgery. He has pushed the envelope to do his laparoscopic operations with the fewest and smallest scars possible, using a range of advanced techniques.
Phil is also an inventor and has 3 medical device patents granted in many territories world-wide, with the lead device, the LiVac Retractor, in clinical use in the USA.
We had the pleasure of two guest speakers at our May meeting. Mr. Brian Dillon, President, Warrnambool and District Community Hospice, and Hospice committee member Ms. Wendy (Roe) Currington.
Brian spoke to us about Hospice and the benefits of Hospice in the home. Hospice is a volunteer-based organization who go into the home of someone who is dying who wishes to die in the comfort of their home.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please go into Google and look up Warrnambool & District Community Hospice.
Mishaps
In October 2022, members were on a reconnaissance ride checking out the roads for our annual Surf City Safari when unfortunately, Neil Primmer hit some loose gravel on a sealed road and came off his bike. Neil sustained a fractured leg and ribs.
December of last year, I was also involved in an accident on the corner of Bromfield Street and Botanic Road. On that particular day the bike slid out from under me on the roundabout and I sustain a fractured ankle.
On the way up to the Blue-Ribbon ride in February this year, Ian McSween was unfortunate enough to hit an object on the road which damaged the radiator pipe on his bike. Ian thought he would have to have the bike trailered back to Warrnambool. However, thanks to Skip and his mechanical knowledge, Ian was back on the road without any worries.
Earlier 2023, members were heading off on their usual Sunday ride from the KFC carpark. As they were departing, Skip on his new bike gave a tweak at what I would say, the wrong time. The result from the little tweak was Skip ended high side some 30 meters from the KFC carpark. Fortunately, the bike ended up with very minor damage, whereas Skip ended up with a bruised ego.
Apparently on a Thursday ride recently, a rider pulled up at a crossroad and was about to take off when he noticed a car approaching. He/she started to move off but decided not to proceed and stopped. The rider felt a bump and turned around to see a fellow rider and his bike lying on the ground, the rider on the ground also knocked off the top box of the front rider while trying to stop him/herself from hitting the rider in front.
Was the rear rider too close or just not paying attention?
Surf City Safari
The 2022 Surf City Safari was another outstanding success. This was attributed to the hard work of the Committee, volunteers and those members that organized probably the largest array of donations for the prizes and raffles.
The ride on the Saturday although very wet, didn’t dampen the participants enthusiasm. Saturday night at the RSL was a great gathering to celebrate the Safari, unfortunately on a not so happy note, sixty percent of the 75 members and their partners present contracted Covid.
This was not known until the following week.
Sunday was a great ride once again with a very nice lunch at Yambuk hall.
Thank you to all our members that compiled and contributed to a fantastic Safari.
We presented a certificate of appreciation to each one of our 22 sponsors.
Lunch With Motorcycle Clubs
March this year saw us meet up with two other motorcycle clubs for a meet and greet at Barney’s Bistro, Pomonal.
We were fortunate enough to meet with riders from, Eureka Social Riders of Ballarat, and South West Touring Club of Portland. Approximately 50 riders were present for a great social day which we plan to have another get together in the future.
Donations
For many years the WDMOC has donated to the Salvation Toy Run. From donating to one organization, we have expanded to include other worthwhile causes. Last year it was decided by the members to donate $1000 to each of the following organisations. The Neil Porter Legacy, the Warrnambool Cancer Centre and the Salvation Army Toy Run.
M2M
Since the inception of the Murray to Moyne, several of our members have supported this event as motorcycle marshals. Errol Carter was the motorcycle ride coordinator that ensured there were enough motorcycle riders to cover the 3 locations that the bicyclists left from. A credit to Errol for more than 30 years’ service.
This year was no exception with majority of the 20 marshals coming from this club. Next year due to gradual decline of cyclists, Swan Hill will be dropped off the start location which will only leave Mildura and Echuca.
WDMOC 50TH Anniversary
On the 14th July 1983 the WDMOC was formed. The club met at the old SES HQ in Timor street with 26 ‘members’ present.
Those ‘members’ present were:
Peter Newell, Brian Elderidge, Jack Taylor, Graeme Amoore, Margret Amoore, Chris Jasper, Betty Jasper, Steve Heazlewood, Don Henderson, Barry Bligh, Peter Warner, Garry Jennings, Brian Mills, Colin Newell, Alan Simpson, Brian Eldridge, Peter McDonough, Don Bell, Roy Slater, Jan Slater, Lyle Morrison, Robert Morrison, Elizabeth Jenkins, Trevor Warnecke, Gary Adams, Julie Templeton.
There second meeting on the 11th August saw 27 members, and their third meeting on the 13th October there was 40 present.
Unfortunately, there were no minutes that I could find for these meeting, so I am unable to advise you who the executive was.
Ride Etiquette
A gentle reminder that we as a club agree to ride as per our discussions. The discussions/ agreement was that we keep a minimum distance of 3 seconds in dry weather from the bike in front of you and ideally in a staggered formation, however the condition of the roads will dictate that. You must be able to see the motorcyclist’s headlight behind you and if they cannot be seen then you must slow down so the headlight can be seen.
At each change of direction, the motorbike behind the lead rider must stop and indicate to the riders behind the change of direction. If we have a new rider or someone has forgotten to stop and indicate, we ask the rider behind stops and indicates.
Ted Collins Rider Training
At our January meeting, we had the pleasure of Ted Collins and his partner Tayla come along and speak to us about their planned rider training at the local go cart track or Mac Park in Mount Gambier. Ted explained the benefits of rider training and what benefits our members would receive. The club voted on that we donate $100 to 15 riders to help pay for their training. Since the we have had a few members take up this offer and have expressed to me what a great benefit it has been.
Register of Members
Ross Maloney spoke to the meeting about his idea of ‘Register of Members’. Ross’s plan is for members to forward their details, as much or as least information as to what they want to contribute.
Members were concerned to give their personal information away and were reluctant to be involved.
Great initiative Ross, however not much support with this one but keep the ideas rolling in.
WDMOC Constitution
At our May meeting 2023, Past President Bill Owens bought it to our attention that there were changes needed in our Constitution. The concerns that Bill had were that the wording of the Constitution ‘left out’ some of our members rights to be a member of the club.
After some discussions Bill advised the members that some members were talking about two different documents. Bill advised us that the ‘correct’ version of our Constitution is located on our web site.
The current Constitution that is on our web site was passed in 2012, and for some unknown reason the ‘old’ Constitution snuck back into the club which the current executive has been working with.
After establishing which Constitution, we are now working with, it was decided that a number of members would sit together and look at what changes need to be made in the current Constitution.
If anyone would like to join this small group just let Elaine or myself know.
